Windows Users: Beware the New iTunes Update

Via ZDNet:

I’m reading lots of complaints about the new iTunes 8 update causing horrific problems on Windows machines, including widespread reports of STOP errors, aka the Blue Screen of Death. My colleague Adrian Kingsley-Hughes has asked readers for reports and Gizmodo has a sketchy post as well.

The author goes on to blame some extra software Apple is "sneaking" into the download.  I tend to doubt there is some deep conspiracy here, but you can read more if interested. (remember Coyote's Law:

When the same set of facts can be explained equally well by

  1. A massive conspiracy coordinated without a single leak between hundreds or even thousands of people    -OR -
  2. Sustained stupidity, confusion and/or incompetence

Assume stupidity.)

I think I will wait a while before updating, though.

I guess it could be Safari, but I updated yesterday, on vista, and haven't had any trouble....

OTOH, I haven't had a third of the trouble everyone assures me I "should" with Vista, and I'm a gamer who likes tweaking the setup....

I took a look at the new features they were offering, didn't see anything that would appeal to me (I was hoping for the ability to pay a few bucks extra to be allowed to burn downloaded movies to a DVD, like they have for music), and ignored it.

An upgrade can never be a real upgrade if it doesn't improve my experience, and it can certainly be much worse.

I updated to the new version of itunes on XP and have had zero problems.

The complainers will have to be more specific about their set ups if they want us to take their plaints seriously.

I just updated to itunes 8 as well with zero problems. Did it on both a mac and pc. I guess the 'assume stupidity' is still valid.

I'm with Jacob. Installed on Mac at home and XP at work (behind serious firewalls) with zero issues.
